The Lund–Arlöv railway project, developed by OHLA, recognized by ENR as one of the best railway projects of 2025
1 de December de 2025
- The project has transformed one of Sweden’s main railway lines, handling up to 650 trains and serving more than 80,000 passengers daily.
- ENR magazine, a global benchmark in the construction industry, already awarded OHLA in this category in 2023, granting the top distinction to the SKI railway project (Norway).
- OHLA currently has a strong presence in Sweden, where it is the largest contractor on the Blue Line of the Stockholm Metro and develops to two major projects on the new East Link high-speed line.
The prestigious international magazine Engineering News-Record (ENR) has recognized the Fyrspåret Lund–Arlöv project, developed by the OHLA–NCC joint venture for Trafikverket, as one of the world’s best railway infrastructures in 2025. This accolade, one of the most significant in the construction sector, rewards the innovation, sustainability, and technical excellence of a project that redefines European standards in railway infrastructure.
The Lund–Arlöv project has modernized one of Sweden’s main railway corridors, connecting Malmö with Stockholm, by expanding the 11-kilometer section between Lund and Arlöv from two to four tracks. This upgrade has increased capacity, improved punctuality, and strengthened the sustainability of rail transport, consolidating the modal shift toward more efficient and environmentally friendly solutions. Thanks to this transformation, the corridor now handles up to 650 trains daily and serves more than 80,000 passengers, becoming a key infrastructure for sustainable mobility in the country.
The project included highly complex technical works such as the construction of temporary tracks to maintain active rail operations, major earthworks, the execution of 2.5 km of retaining walls, a 400-meter tunnel in Åkarp using the “cut and cover” technique with diaphragm walls, the renovation of Burlöv, Åkarp, and Hjärup stations, and the construction of the new Klostergården station. It also involved 9 railway bridges, 13 road bridges, 2 underpasses, 7 km of temporary roads, and 5 pumping stations. The four tracks entered service in 2023, and additional phases were completed in 2025, with formal delivery on May 5, 2025.
The project stands out for its pioneering use of digital technologies, including a real-time digital twin integrating BIM, GIS, and drones to coordinate data, plan in 4D, and manage risks. A Common Data Environment (CDE) was created in the cloud using Autodesk BIM 360, centralizing models, schedules, and documentation, and digital simulations were carried out for critical operations such as bridge construction over the E6 motorway.
Mobile applications were also implemented for inspections and instant traceability, enabling precise execution of critical structures and continuous quality control. Sustainability was another cornerstone of the project, achieving significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions through optimized concrete, recycled steel, and non-fossil fuels, as well as reusing 80% of temporary materials and surplus. This approach earned the Sweden Green Building Award 2022 for sustainable infrastructure.
The project also had a positive impact on local communities by reducing noise through trench tracks and acoustic barriers, improving accessibility with modern stations such as Klostergården—integrated into the urban fabric and respectful of the Höjeådalen nature reserve—and increasing train frequency to enhance regional connectivity.
A Key Player in Sweden’s Sustainable Mobility
OHLA has established itself as a benchmark in sustainable mobility in Sweden, where its technical expertise and commitment to excellence have made it a key player in the market. This position is reinforced by its participation in two contracts within the East Link (Ostlänken), the largest infrastructure investment project in the country’s history, designed for high-speed trains, as well as four contracts on the Stockholm Metro, where OHLA is the largest contractor.
Within East Link, the first contract corresponds to the Nyköping Travel Center, the largest of the new stations to be built along the route. Its design includes more numerous, longer, and wider platforms, capable of accommodating long-distance, regional, and commuter trains, improving accessibility for both daily and long-distance travelers.
A key aspect of the project is to facilitate smooth transitions between different modes of transport: plans include a new pedestrian and cycling path under the tracks and new access buildings on both sides of the railway, improving circulation, road safety, and connecting two areas of the city currently separated by the tracks. The center will serve as a hub for sustainable mobility in a growing city.
The second contract is the Gerstaberg project, a new railway section that will relieve congestion on the busy western main line and allow more trains to run at higher speeds. The project includes five new concrete bridges and three kilometers of double track, alternating bridges, embankments, and trenches. The works involve track realignments, earthworks, rock cuts, new technical workshops, temporary construction roads, and road expansions. Two new high-speed switches are being installed, allowing maneuvers at speeds of up to 160 km/h, enhancing efficiency and operational capacity along the corridor.
Regarding the Stockholm Metro contracts, OHLA has made a significant impact on the city’s metro system since 2021. The first contract, Kungsträdgården, included the excavation of 4,500 meters of tunnels 90 meters below sea level, reusing 23,000 m² of granite rock. In 2022, the company added the Gullmarsplan project, with 1,200 meters of tunnels and a 300-meter-long underground station built 70 meters deep, where a 100% electric shotcrete robot was used.
Later, OHLA was awarded the Sockenplan Phase 2 and Slakthusområdet project, which includes 1.2 kilometers of new metro line, two tracks, a service tunnel, and a new station: Slakthusområdet. The work also includes a 310-meter cut-and-cover concrete tunnel. In 2023, the company took another step forward with the Contract 2651 Stationer Bygg, which involves the design and construction of seven new stations in the southern section of the Blue Line.
A Group Full of Awards
This award adds to the one OHLA received in 2023 when ENR honored the SKI project in Norway in the same category. That year, the magazine also recognized the Curicó Hospital (Peru) in the healthcare category and the Américo Vespucio Highway (Chile) in the roadworks category.
In 2022, four other OHLA infrastructures were recognized in ENR’s Best Projects 2022: the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans Nursing Home (Florida), the RiverEdge Park pedestrian bridge (Aurora, Illinois), the RFK Bridge ramp over the Harlem River (New York), and the National Forensic Mental Hospital in Ireland.
In 2024, ENR awarded the Sullana Hospital (Peru) as one of the best healthcare projects worldwide.
