






OHLA USA, through its subsidiary Community Asphalt, carried out a $233 million design-build project aimed at improving mobility and connectivity in Southeast Florida. The project was developed to ease traffic congestion, accommodate the region’s future growth, strengthen hurricane and emergency evacuation routes, and optimize connectivity between key transportation infrastructures.
The project included the design and construction of a 3.1-mile tolled express roadway within the median of I-75, featuring four lanes (two in each direction) separated by a central barrier wall. In addition, the works involved the construction of four flyovers, five bridges, and the widening of two bridges and ramps at the interchange between I-75 and Florida’s Turnpike, with the aim of facilitating new express lane connections and improving traffic flow in the area.
Among the project’s main components were also the reconstruction of the Miami Gardens Drive interchange, the replacement of the Bass Creek Road bridge deck, and the construction of sound barrier walls to protect eight neighborhoods adjacent to the highway. Furthermore, the scope of works included the construction of mechanically stabilized earth walls, drainage systems, and the installation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) infrastructure, lighting, and advanced signaling systems.
Thanks to efficient planning and close coordination among the different teams involved, the project achieved one of its key milestones by opening the I-75 express lanes ahead of schedule, significantly enhancing the capacity and safety of this strategic regional mobility infrastructure.
The project was recognized for its technical and construction excellence with the Outstanding Design-Build Project award granted by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida, and was also selected as one of the year’s best projects in the Highway/Bridge category by Engineering News-Record.
