OHLA Drives the Algeciras-Madrid-Zaragoza Railway Highway Through Its Specialized Subsidiary G&O in Two Key Projects

  • Both projects will advance toward a more sustainable, efficient, and competitive freight transport model in Spain.

OHLA is strengthening its commitment to sustainable mobility and the decarbonization of transport through its specialized railway works subsidiary, Agrupación Guinovart Obras y Servicios Hispania, S.A. (G&O). The company is participating in a joint venture (UTE) in two strategic contracts for the development of the future Algeciras-Madrid-Zaragoza Railway Highway, with a combined value exceeding €93 million (excluding VAT).

This key infrastructure will enable a significant shift of freight transport from road to rail, resulting in a notable reduction in carbon footprint, less congestion from heavy traffic on roads, and a substantial improvement in the country’s logistical efficiency.

The first contract, with a budget of €55 million (excluding VAT) and a 24-month execution period, involves stabilizing the Almargen slope on the Bobadilla-Algeciras line, as well as expanding the clearance of 21 tunnels between Ronda and Algeciras. The main objective is to resolve a long-standing instability issue on the slope of line 420 Bif. Maravillas – Algeciras, in the municipality of Cañete La Real (Málaga), between the Almargen (P.K. 30+000) and Setenil (P.K. 53+800) stations, which has affected this railway section for decades.

G&O, as the maintenance company for this railway line, brings deep technical knowledge of the area, allowing it to anticipate challenges, optimize resources, and ensure safe and efficient execution. This experience is a strategic advantage for the success of the project, which will require the simultaneous coordination of multiple teams on the railway platform, meeting deadlines and operational constraints.

The second contract, awarded for €38.9 million (excluding VAT) with a 12-month execution period, focuses on adapting clearances in overpasses and tunnels between San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) and Santa María de Huerta (Soria), on line 200. The work includes grade lowering, demolition and replacement of overpasses, deck renovations, catenary adjustments, and complex tunnel operations such as in the Torralba tunnel, which is over 3 km long.

It is worth noting that the electrification work, which accounts for about 20% of the second contract, will be carried out by another OHLA Group subsidiary, EyM Guinovart, specialized in this type of work.

In parallel with these two major projects, G&O is also working on the construction of siding track extensions at the Arcos de Jalón (Soria) and Sigüenza (Guadalajara) stations. This project, valued at nearly €7 million, aims to carry out all necessary work to extend a siding track to a usable length of 750 meters at each of these stations.

These projects represent a firm step toward a more environmentally friendly transport model, aligned with the decarbonization and energy efficiency goals promoted by the European Union. The Algeciras-Zaragoza Railway Highway will become a strategic corridor for freight transport, connecting southern Spain with the center and northeast of the country, and facilitating connection with Europe via the Mediterranean axis.
