The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA METRO) awarded OHLA USA the design-build contract for the new Union-Patsaouras Plaza Busway Station, located in downtown Los Angeles. This marks OHLA USA’s first project with LA METRO and its first design-build project in California.
The objective of the project was to improve connectivity for Bus Rapid Transit users at Union Station and to enhance the value of underutilized property. One of the main challenges was achieving these goals without disrupting traffic on the adjacent I-101 freeway or affecting existing infrastructure. OHLA’s efforts led to the project being recognized as the Best Regional Project in the Transportation category (2021) by the prestigious publication Engineering News-Record (ENR).
The scope of the project included widening both sides of the El Monte Busway bridge to accommodate the new station platform, as well as the construction of an enclosed pedestrian walkway connecting the platform to a pedestrian bridge and a new landing within the existing transit plaza. The works also included the installation of a staircase and an accessible elevator. During construction, materials included 929 m² of steel panels for the pedestrian bridge and 2,133 linear meters of drilled shafts for the foundations, ensuring structural stability.
The historic Union Station serves both short- and long-distance travelers, with connections including intercity and long-distance trains, Southern California regional rail services, and local light rail systems within Los Angeles County. This is complemented by an extensive bus network that enhances accessibility and connectivity across the metropolitan area.
The new pedestrian bridge allows passengers to walk directly from Patsaouras Transit Plaza to the new and upgraded bus station, eliminating the long and complex route to the previous stop located at the El Monte Busway on Alameda Avenue. Additionally, the project incorporates new lighting systems and closed-circuit television (CCTV), enhancing passenger safety during both daytime and nighttime hours.
The project will strengthen this transportation hub with new connections to bus, light rail and rail services, increasing accessibility and promoting a more efficient, safe and comfortable mobility system for users.
