OHLA, through its subsidiary SATO, specialized in maritime and port infrastructures, has been awarded two major projects in the ports of Barcelona and Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura), with a combined value exceeding 95 million euros. Both contracts highlight the company’s technical capabilities and specialization in this sector.

In the Port of Barcelona, the project was awarded by the Port Authority to the joint venture formed by SATO and Rubau. It involves the construction of three new berths for the future ferry terminal at the Adossat quay. With a budget of 54.6 million euros and a construction period of 51 months, the project includes the expansion of existing infrastructure by building new berths with varying drafts and lengths. The chosen construction solution is based on the use of reinforced concrete caissons resting on a foundation of rockfill and a bedding layer, creating a stable and durable platform for port operations.

The work also includes backfilling and the creation of a new esplanade, along with the installation of port equipment and utility networks. As part of the preliminary tasks, the remains of the wreck “Oberón,” which sank in the area where one of the berths will be located, will be removed.

This set of infrastructures will enable the launch of a new permanent ro-pax terminal with four docking points and an optimized configuration for passenger and vehicle traffic, providing the port with greater operational versatility.

Meanwhile, in the Port of Puerto del Rosario, the OHLA–SATO joint venture will build a new breakwater and commercial quay for a total of 40.6 million euros. The project aims to strengthen the shelter in the southern area of the port, improving vessel maneuverability and protecting the facilities, as well as enabling a new quay primarily intended for fuel traffic, which is key to the island’s energy supply.

The project features a mixed solution combining an initial sloped section and a second vertical breakwater section with berthing capacity. One of the technical highlights of this project is the use of concrete cubipods as protective elements on the outer part of the breakwater, enhancing resistance to wave action and harsh maritime conditions. Large-tonnage blocks and a reinforced concrete parapet will also be incorporated to minimize overtopping. The infrastructure will be completed with facilities to supply basic services to vessels, as well as fenders and mooring elements.

SATO, a benchmark in port infrastructures

With a track record dating back to 1927, SATO (Sociedad Anónima Trabajos y Obras) is one of the most experienced construction companies in the maritime and port sector in Spain. Since its integration into OHLA in 1997, it has consolidated its leadership in the sector, participating in some of the most emblematic works in the country, such as the expansion of the Port of Algeciras, the south breakwater of the Port of Barcelona, the expansion of the Port of Gijón, the expansion of the Port of Alicante, the central breakwater of the Port of Bilbao, and the outer port of A Coruña (Punta Langosteira).
