Desarrollos carried out this large, top-tier coastal tourist complex, which stands out for its cutting-edge design and highest quality standards, earning it numerous international recognitions. In a first phase, covering 250 hectares, four luxury hotel complexes were built, all currently operational: Rosewood, Banyan Tree, Fairmont and Andaz (Hyatt’s luxury brand). Alongside them, one of Mayakoba’s main attractions is its El Camaleón golf course, which has made history by hosting the first PGA Tour event ever held outside the United States and Canada.

Mayakoba is, in every sense, an outstanding project, comprising a hotel and sports complex located in a highly privileged setting, a feature that has been emphasised by Desarrollos from the outset. In this context, environmental care and the project’s organic integration with its surroundings have positioned it as a truly unique destination.

The design has been developed by internationally renowned architectural firms, incorporating an integrated environmental management system since its conception. This approach is based on the rational use of native vegetation and the restriction of vehicle traffic, both land-based and maritime, prioritising sustainable solutions. Furthermore, the Mayakoba complex includes its own electric substation and water treatment plant, enabling the minimisation of environmental impact on its idyllic natural surroundings of Caribbean beaches, dunes and mangroves.

In terms of awards and recognitions, Mayakoba has been recognised by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) and Rainforest Alliance with their highest distinctions: the Ulysses Award and the Sustainable Standard-Setter Award, respectively. The development has also received the AAA Five Diamond Award from the American Automobile Association, granted to both the Fairmont and Rosewood hotels. In addition, Travel + Leisure magazine included the Fairmont hotel among the World’s 500 Best Hotels and named the Rosewood hotel the Best Luxury Hotel in Mexico and Central America and one of the top 20 in the world.

The Banyan Tree hotel was ranked by Tripadvisor among the best luxury hotels worldwide, standing out in the Spa and Romance categories. Meanwhile, the El Camaleón golf course holds the Audubon International certification, recognising its excellence in areas such as habitat management, sustainable water use, environmental education, and the reduction and efficient use of chemical substances, and has also been designated a wildlife sanctuary. Finally, Mayakoba has received the Ecotourism Award, granted by the Miguel Alemán A.C. Foundation.
